AI comes to Backlog with its new Issue Summaries feature

This powerful new tool utilizes OpenAI’s technology to summarize the content and comments within your tasks, making it easy to get up to speed on everything that’s happened so far. Managing complex projects with lots of tasks and comments can be challenging, and this AI-powered feature is about to make your life a little easier.
How Issue Summaries can help you
Backlog has always excelled at keeping your project history and task discussions organized and accessible. However, as tasks evolve and accumulate more comments, it can become challenging to extract critical information and grasp the bigger picture quickly. That’s where our Issue Summaries feature comes into play.
With Issue Summaries, you can now effortlessly summarize the content of your most intricate and data-rich tasks. This feature harnesses the capabilities of OpenAI to extract the most pertinent details, allowing you to stay informed, organized, and in control of your projects.
This is a game-changer for enhancing team communication, ensuring clarity and consistency in task discussions, and streamlining how team members understand complex ideas and requirements. Who can use it?
We believe advanced project management tools should be accessible to all users, regardless of their subscription plan. That’s why we’re pleased to announce that the Issues Summaries feature is available on all Backlog plans*, including our free plan. This means that whether you’re a solo freelancer, a small startup, or a large organization, you can benefit from this innovative feature at no extra cost.
*Please note that this feature is not yet available on Backlog Enterprise.
Enabling this feature
To begin using the Issue Summaries feature, you’ll need an OpenAI API key. Obtaining this key is a straightforward process, but it’s essential to keep in mind that the API key registration is specific to each space within Backlog. To make this as seamless as possible, we recommend obtaining an OpenAI API key contracted by your organization rather than an individual.
- Registering the OpenAI API Key
Location: Space Settings > General Settings > OpenAI API Key
User Permissions: Administrators and Contract Managers
In your Space Settings, navigate to General Settings, and then OpenAI API Key. Here, you can register your OpenAI API key. Please note that you’ll need to agree to additional terms regarding OpenAI during the registration process.
- Enable “Issue Summaries” for Each Project
Location: Project Settings > Integrations > OpenAI
User Permissions: Administrators and Contract Managers
In your Project Settings, go to Integrations and select OpenAI. Within the OpenAI settings, you can enable the Issue Summaries feature and save your changes.
