Backlog’s new and improved Gantt chart is here
Keeping projects on track can get tricky, especially when you’re managing multiple tasks, timelines, and team members. Updates need to be fast, and finding the information you need shouldn’t slow you down. We get it — and that’s why we’ve redesigned Backlog’s Gantt chart to make it even better at helping you stay organized and hit those deadlines.
Our new and improved Gantt chart, now available in Beta, is packed with features that simplify your workflow. We’ve added enhanced filtering, bulk updates, and flexible time scales to make organizing and tracking tasks easier.
Now you can make quick updates, view tasks in more detail, and keep every project moving smoothly, all in one place. Here’s how these upgrades make managing projects faster, clearer, and better than ever! Here’s what’s new:
What’s new?
1. New side panel
One of the most noticeable updates is the new side panel, which replaces the old pop-up task dialog. The side panel makes it easy to view task details without leaving the Gantt chart, so you can multitask more effectively. Here’s what you can do in the side panel:
- View the Gantt chart while checking out task details.
- Directly update status, assignee, start dates, and due dates.
- Leave comments and reactions to issues.
2. Enhanced filtering options
You can now filter tasks based on Issue Type, Category, Milestone, and Assignee in the new Gantt chart. This means you can customize your view to focus on just the tasks that matter most right now, making it easier to manage large projects and stay organized without digging through unrelated tasks.
3. Quick status and assignee updates
Updating tasks should be simple, and we’ve made that easier by allowing you to directly adjust status and assignees right from the Gantt chart’s left panel. With just a click in the dropdown menu, you can assign a task or mark it as complete, keeping the workflow moving without extra steps.
4. Shareable short URLs
Need to share a specific view of your project? The new Gantt chart allows you to generate short URLs from the issue search page, making it easy to quickly share filtered task views with team members or stakeholders for faster coordination.
5. Bulk updates for start and due dates
Bulk updating dates has never been easier. Now, you can update the start and due dates for multiple tasks at once by selecting the checkboxes next to the issues and dragging them on the timeline. If you’re working with parent-child task relationships, simply drag the parent task, and all related subtasks will update as well—saving time and keeping your timeline aligned.
6. Flexible time scales
We understand that every project has its own timeline. While the classic Gantt chart only showed tasks on a daily scale, the new version lets you view tasks by days, weeks, or months. Now you can toggle between daily, weekly, and monthly views to get the right level of detail, whether you’re planning long-term or managing daily tasks.
7. Grouping by issue type
To help you quickly locate specific types of tasks, we’ve added the option to group tasks by issue type. Whether you’re organizing by bugs, features, or improvements, this grouping feature offers a clear visual of task categories, so you can stay focused and organized.
7. Scheduling unscheduled tasks
In the old Gantt chart, tasks without start or due dates were hidden. With the Beta version, you’ll now see a list of these unscheduled tasks directly on the chart, allowing you to add dates on the spot. This keeps all tasks visible, ensuring nothing slips through the cracks.
